You can also verify the alignment of the cables on the turning sheaves below the pedestal and the alignment of the cables as the engage with the quadrant.
There are needle bearings on the shaft of the steering wheel. A SMALL amount of lithium (IIRC) grease in the hole above each of the 2 bearings is sufficient.
