Josh, I was scolded by Peggy Hall (The Head Mistress) for suggesting the use of choline in every fresh water fill up. Supposedly, you should shock-treat the tank in the spring and then it should be fine as long as you don’t introduce suspect water into it (and use it regularly). One big point is that you should make sure that you run the water long enough that the filling hose (from the water supply to the boat) is completely emptied of the stale water that was there. Another thing is that the chlorine solutions are not stable enough and they would release choline within a couple of days or so and after that the water is no longer chlorinated (and protected). If you still want to keep it chlorinated, there are some solutions that are specifically designed to release the chlorine very slowly and might last for a few weeks.
As for the freeze protection, I don’t believe that the Trident hoses (and even less, any rigid (plastic or copper) connectors) can fully protect against freezing. Maybe just below the freeze point (0 C), but do not believe that at the temperatures that we experience here (up to –30 C, –20 F(??)). I would want to test it on someone else’s boat first, before trying on mine. So, even with the Trident hoses, I would evacuate (blow) all water from the water lines, run the AF through them, and blow them again. I think this is a reasonable insurance against the risk of re-plumbing the boat. Stale water will grow biologics no matter how much light gets in. I always chlorinate my tanks so the water stays fresh. I find that 1Tbsp per 20 gal tank is a good compromise between drinkability and cleanliness. A home run using a flexible drinking water hose product like that made by Shields or Trident is my choice. The flexibility coupled with the freeze protection and durability all and up to a quality and lasting solution. Use barbed brass fittings and clamps. It sounds like this was Bob Boyer's solution. I am sure this has been gone over before...so please indulge me. Replacing, re-designing, water lines in 1981 40-2. Pex is the obvious choice. Are there less obvious (and have cheaper tools required to install) choices? Has anyone improved on the original design? I am thinking of adding easier accessible manifolds and an additional line for antifreeze and blowing out water. Thanks in advance. David F. Risch, J. D.
