You are all so right!

This week I have decided is time to begin the annual servicing of Persistence’s
six winches. Usually I just clean them and then apply Lewmar winch grease.
However I recently saw someone post that grease should be avoided on the pawls
so I decided to purchase pawl oil and while at it a couple replacement pawl
springs since I am bound to lose one sooner or later. Was $36 for a small
bottle of pawl oil and three springs. Outside of the price of major upgrade
items (sails, electronics, new winches, etc …) the fun of our boat hobby is
made up of many many $36 quick stops at the chandlery each year and they
eventually really add up!

Note that my annual winch servicing is unfortunately usually every 2nd year ….

Previous boat was a J27. I did keep track of all costs for upgrades and
purchase and did not include regular maintenance items (bottom paint, etc ..)
or operating costs (marina fees, etc …). Purchased it as a project boat for
$7000 USD in 2007 when the Canadian and US dollars were basically at par. By
the time we sold it for $12,750 (CAD) in 2014 the purchase plus upgrades were
over $31,000. We took that boat from being a wreck to one that was well loved
and it sold in less than 2 weeks and we had three different prospective buyers
that wanted it. Nut Case was a great boat and we enjoyed it immensely. Do not
begrudge a single dollar spent

On the other hand on Persistence we bought an already well loved boat and did
not track the constant costs ….

Subject: Stus-List therapy and patriotism

FWIW, I put all of my receipts into a folder for warranty sake and in case I
need to reorder something that worked well. But I'm afraid to ever add up the
expenses. I consider this sailing hobby and maintaining a work of art like a
C&C sailboat to be therapy in many ways. It provides many hours of physical
work as well as keeping me healthy mentally, problem solving and learning new
skills. I should be able to write off the expenses as medicine. A boat also
provides a great opportunity to help the economy when buying all the necessary
materials and just the taxes paid out over the fifteen year ownership would
amount to a considerable sum. Makes me feel patriotic.

Now back to glorious sanding a priming.
