Our new 35-2 had the mast step replaced by the previous owner in 2003. He
used thinset concrete, with a stainless drain pipe running through it. He
also said that he added stainless rebar for reinforcement, which sounds
like overkill. I haven't pulled the mast or cast step plate yet, so this is
just information I got from him. It does appear to be very solid. I do
wonder if concrete is a good choice as it could allow moisture to get in to
the keel bolts, since I believe the two forward ones will run through it,
and might make dropping the mast very difficult. Perhaps he used a collar
around the bolts, which might be a good idea regardless of which material
you use.
