The rudder is held up in the tube by a through bolt with a bronze roller on each side. The rollers ride on a stainless ring. Anything could have contaminated this interface.
The tube is acetal nylon and some owners have installed zirc fittings for greasing. It's an awkward reach to grease and I would suggest installing grease hoses to allow remote greasing. If the alignment of the quadrant and the turning sheaves under the pedestal has changed in any way you may be hearing the cables rubbing as they enter the quadrant groove. Multiple owners including myself have posted about degradation of the sheave plate under the pedestal. As the plate weekends the sheaves will twist upward and cause the cables to no longer enter the quadrant gear straight. You would see the cables rubbing or evidence of rubbing on the upper edge of the quadrant/bull gear. You might be tempted to simply raise the quadrant to force the cables to have a fair lead. This is just a bandaid. Either the rudder has dropped or the sheaves have twisted up.
