David, if you must provide an extinguisher specifically for the engine compartment, I would look at something like a Fireboy automatic discharge extinguisher. They use a “clean” product and it’s activated by a sprinkler head type device activated by a specific temperature of 175F. There are other brands too and they can all be mounted inside the engine compartment with no fire port required. I have never tried one but probably should, the electrical components in the engine compartment are my concern not the diesel. It looks like 25 cubic feet for just less than $200 if that helps.
