So I have Barrient 32ST winches for my primaries. They are roughly
equivalent to a modern Harken 60ST. The Harken is rated for 8mm to 16mm
line. I checked the performance of 8mm line in the self-tailer of my 32ST
and found it completely ineffective. I tried the 12mm Sta-Set X which I
had been using and found that it only partially tensioned the self tailer
clamp. I decided to move up to 14mm or 16mm which absolutely appeared
would fit. Realizing that this size is massive in comparison to the loads
that it would be handling I started looking for characteristics that were
more indifferent to the stretch and more appreciative of the handling,
winch operation, abrasion resistance, and price. Regular, cheap sta-set
immediately jumped into mind but I decided to do a little more research.
I've posted this link before:

I selected Samson XLS since it rated excellent in all 3 categories and was
priced on par with sta-set. Upon calling around I found that 16mm was
extremely rare and 14mm was available but uncommon. I also found that
Samson had revised the product to XLS3. I wanted white with blue
fleck/tracer. 85' would probably have been enough but 90' added comfort.
The everyday price at Fawcett's was $1.97/ft but if I got 100' they
reduced the price to $1.77. 1.97@90 ft = $177.30 and obviously 1.77@100ft
= $177 so it was a bit of a no brainer. Fawcett's had to order the 500'
spool so shipping would be delayed but free since it was over $50. WM Pro
price was $1.97/ft with no other discounts. Regular WM price is $2.49/ft.
They had it in the warehouse and could ship same day. More than likely it
would have been available for pickup in store tomorrow.

So John, final answer: the super secret spool with 400' remaining at
Fawcett's is: 9/16th (14mm) Samson XLS3 in white with blue fleck priced at
$1.97/ft for less than 100', or $1.77 for more than 100'. Come and get it
