A couple of times I've "surfed" my 38 down a wave and hit 12 or 14 knots for a brief interval. Very exhilarating... and the most memorable part is the sound of the boat accelerating and the water flow past the rudder.

Your comment about doing 15-16 on Der Baron reminded me of something.... The straw that broke the camel's back and made me quite going to Sailing Anarchy EVER! was a post from some dufus who claimed to have done a series of spinnaker peals to get this Newport 41 up to over 20 sustained knots during a Baha Ha Ha rally to Mexico.

Joe,
The best I've done is about 35 knots on my DN on the hard water here in the Chesapeake Bay.
The record for a DN iceboat is about 65 kts. It's really scary when it goes greater than ~ 25 kts. Fortunately most of my ice sailing is usually below 20 kts.

On Der Baron, we've occasionally hit 15-16 knots. We call that white knuckle weather!!
