Lots of solutions are possible--simplest is probably mounting a dual-system that uses manual valves to direct the fuel thru one system and not another. Couple of points to consider: The first filter your fuel goes thru is likely the most important one to duplicate IMHO--not the engine mounted one--which is usually easily reached and replaced. Be sure to consider the lift capabilities of the engine mounted pump in your decision on where to mount the duplicate system--some lift pumps can barely get fuel to theengine filter as mounted. My Beta 28 had a marginal lift on the engine mounted pump which caused all kinds of headaches until my mechanic figured it out. He solved the problem by adding small in-line 12 volt pump/filters set-up in parallel and without any valves. The energized pump/filter takes the output of the Racor and feeds the engine fuel filter, the other pump (not energized) is normally closed (which eliminates the need for any fuel valves). When (not if) pump #1 fails or its in-line filter gets clogged, I switch it off and switch on pump/filter #2 and off I go. So for different reasons, I now have a 'dual' system in so far as the fuel pumps are considered: Fuel tank--->in-line shut-off valve--->Racor/30 micron filter-----------> >------------Pump/filter 1 >-------------->Engine filter >------------Pump/filter 2
The marginal engine lift pump is now totally bypassed. The 12 pump with integral in-line filter is apparently used in many fuel systems and IIRC cost < $10 each at any auto parts store. I was thinking about re-mounting it and using it as a backup filter in the event the usual filter becomes clogged. I could also use it for polishing with a small pump. Have any of you done this, and do you have some photos and a schematic as to how the valves and flow would function? Thanks!
