Joe,

Does anyone replace a block before it fails?

I was out sailing the other day and could NOT get the genoa furled. I ended up
dropping it on deck and bagging it. I suspected the new sail is maybe a few
inches off the old sail. I took some measurements, replaced shackles, and got
the sail up with the top swivel right where I wanted it. The sail still would
only roll up partway. What the?????????
It turns out the rachet block all the way aft has a defect where it totally
locks up for either direction under load. At about the halfway point the load
on the line was enough to jam it. I was looking 35 feet forward and 55 feet up
when the issue was about 1 foot away from my face. Doh! I guess 32 years of
service is all you get out of them.
