We picked our prior boat, a 72 35 MK1, at an
auction. The person that brought it to the sale
location did not open the seacock and the engine
overheated so bad that the paint burned off. I
am not too sure what degree of harm it
precipitated. But eventually, I got it running
like a champ. They are incredibly rugged
machines. FWIW, to my ear the engine sounded pretty good.

It sounds like what you are saying is it was run
without cooling water till it burnt up?
