Danny;
I had an old IPad, model MC985LL/A, that had Garmin Blue Chart software on it and which I used for navigation when moving boats. I’m partial to the Garmin software. The old IPad stopped updating at IOS 9.3.6. And Garmin Blue Chart has been discontinued in favor of the Active Captain app. (Blue Chart Mobile still works, BTW, but the charts are out of date and can’t be updated.) I use the old IPad mostly as an e reader and to check my bank balance, IRA, and the weather and NHC. I picked up a used cellular capable (though I don’t use the cellular connection) IPad Air, MD791LL/A, in a local pawn shop for $125. It started out with IOS 9.something, but just recently upgraded to 12.5.4. I run the Active Captain App on it, and the IPad stores a version of the current charts on my Garmin chart plotter. It is the backup (well, plus a couple of old battery powered handheld GPSs in the ditch bag) on my boat and my go to Nav software on the boats I deliver. I had considered Aquamaps as an alternative nav app, but decided using new charts I’d already bought was preferable to using two different software programs. I've had good luck buying used iPads on backmarket.com <http://backmarket.com> and gazelle.com <http://gazelle.com> . Be sure it is cellular ready or you will have to buy an external bluetooth GPS. I'm not sure of the exact model but out has the 3g capability. It's 11 inches and probably 7 years old - ish. I'm in the boat now and left it at home so I can't check. I will look further into when I get back. Taking my boat back to home port, in mattapoisett, after nearly 2 years on the hard in Barrington, RI She looks stunning!
