Timely discussion, a group of C&C owners here in Whitby ON have been comparing notes. (my 33-2, two 32s and a 30-2)
Windstar - my 33-2 has a 10kg Bruce, 50' heavy chain and 120' heavy four plait rode (a bit too big for the cleats.) I set it carefully and have never yet dragged. I have a fortress (danforth) and have struggled to get it to set in the weedy conditions here. I am looking for a second "main" anchor toa take cruising so I have a backup. Windstar came with a bigger forged steel danforth, which is so difficult to stow and handle it stays home. The 30-2 uses a 7.5kg bruce and (I think) 30' chain plus rode - no dragging issues but he is considering a larger anchor. He often sets a second as insurance though the primary has not failed him. One of the 32s uses a 15KG CQR and around 20' of chain and routinely goes a 'draggin, even after a good solid set. He's looking for a bruce and 50' of chain. The other 32 has two BIG new anchors, one a Rocna, plus a healthy length of chain. Not taking any chances. The research seems to suggest that of the traditional anchors. (plough, claw, etc) the bruce has the strongest combination of reliability and versatility. Its also easy to stow. The newer scoop types are apparently better on all fronts, and I am tempted to explore that though a used bruce is substantially cheaper and it has proven itself well. I might go to a 15kg bruce and use it as my main only when cruising. (the #80 spade in Aluminum is appealing. The C$1000 isnt....) I do think that the 50' of chain plays a significant role. This and a 10-15kg anchor is as much as I want to manage without a windlass. On a recent cruise I anchored for 3 nights in 12' of water in a very weedy (over mud) bay. Varied winds. When I retrieved the 10kg Bruce anchor I noted the first 25' or so of chain was packed with muck indicating that the anchor had not only set, but had continued to bury itself and the chain deeper. My buddy with the CQR dragged twice. So, yes, the Bruce is OK!
