At this point the search has been abandoned, it is very likely the boat
has sunk as extensive searching has not turned up anything. I'm
perturbed by the images of someone I don't know, on my boat and probably
wearing my foul weather gear, fighting for their life. This weekend has
been like being in a bad Netflix movie. Even if they'd found the boat
the best case would be taking the thief off, the coastguard wouldn't tow
the boat 300 miles back, so she'd be abandoned.
So it goes. We shall see how the insurance company behaves, it should
be simple but there isn't a pile of wreckage that I can point to and say
"See - boat no more"... so we shall see. But it seems that we are in
the market for a new to us boat. It is daunting to start over, I'd
spent 11 years working on Secret Plans, rebuilding pretty much
everything, adding features, tweaking this and that. Lots of memories -
cruising - some racing - the "boys fishin' missions" - my son growing
up, learning, and last year borrowing the boat on his own for the first
time. To have that taken away is pretty tough.

and connected the dots that it is my boat missing. The short
version - Wednesday night my boat was stolen, sailed out of
Halifax into the middle of Hurricane Larry, where the thief had
sufficient issues to merit activating a PLB that was onboard. PLB
battery has since died, and searching for the boat has only
resulted in sighting flares Friday night.
Working theory is that the thief is an escaped drug smuggler from
Antigua who had recently been arrested smuggling $60m of coke into
the country (by sailboat) and escaped during a hospital checkup.
I couldn't make this up...
