I actually prefer the knot over the splice because it prevents the halyard from 
getting stuck up in the sheave opening...I had that happen some time ago, and 
it's a royal pain...!I don't think the loss in line strength is enough to cause 
issues.. the cover will wear out before the line breaks...;

The Halyard Hitch has worked well for eons. Less hassle. 
 
Some conventional knots don't work well with high modulus rope though. it would 
depend on the sheathing. Easy enough to test.
