Depending on where the speakers are mounted, there may not be a need for backing. In my case, there were two inspection ports under the helm seat. I removed the inspection ports and made rings out of acrylic to reduce the hole diameter for the speakers. Since the rear of the speakers aren't visible, and the speakers aren't subject to damage from movable objects, there was no need to cover the back of the speakers.
