Janet:
I understand that you’re dealing with existing cutouts, and your solution is reasonable. FWIW, when I bought my C&C 34, there were old speakers in large cutouts in each of the two main cabin salon walls. One of the walls experienced splitting at a cutout (similar to a tabbing separation issue, but worse). Rather than replace the old oversized speakers with new ones, I removed them, repaired the crack in the wall, and installed teak louvered vents in the cutouts. They looked nice, strengthened the walls in the area of the cutouts, and increased ventilation. Especially given advancement in technology such as Bose speakers, the old way of cutting holes in bulkheads to install speakers and running wires all over the place makes little sense to me. Sound quality is very good, and they can also be used on picnic tables. I installed a pair of Fusion SM Shallow Mount speakers in Touche down below. They sound great. https://www.amazon.com/FUSION-SM-F65CW-Shallow-Square-Speakers/dp/B081LBV26T Surface mounted them in the Fusion SM mounting spacers so did not have to drill a big hole in the bulkhead. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/674262/pn/010-12937-00/ -- Dennis C.
