I’ve worked on several examples of both these yanmars and universals and believe that a non-abused yanmar is a better (and safer) choice if you are repowering with a used engine. Very elegant engineering, easy to service all peripheral parts well integrated. Service access is on the starboard side (with the i flywheel aft) on the 2gm/3gm series. Not sure how the 34 is laid out. I had the two cylinder version (2gmF I believe) on my ‘84 33-–2 and it had more than enough power. Make sure the compression is good if possible. These engines don’t have glow plugs (simpler!) and rely on their their higher compression for reliable cold starting. Check the mechanical fuel pump for leaks, they do wear. Sometimes people replace these with electric fuel pumps, which I believe is unnecessary and adds complexity (therefore reducing reliability) The stock mechanical pumps are are inexpensive, and last for decades. I replaced mine when it began to seep (the early warning - the leaks progressively worsen before failure) after 30 years of use. I also like that the mechanical pump runs and stops when the engine does. Check the bleed screw on the onboard fuel filter. Ham-fisted mechanics can strip that part, repair is a nuisance. The kanzaki transmission may (will, eventually) require some service as the conical clutch mating surfaces can glaze and wear over time and begin to slip. They are available in two reduction ratios so be clear on that when buying. Not sure I’d want, or want to retrofit a used saildrive. YMMV of course. Dave

Should be a "drop in", almost. Yanmar best bet with parts and service everywhere. Previous owner repowered it, but I understand it fit well. I do not have the sail drive version though. Nice amount of power for the 34 in my opinion.
