The system that's being discussed here doesn't change anything. A mirror can still be a raw ATOM feed containing metadata. OData is an extension on the server side that allows REST operations--the raw feed is still the raw feed. Worst case scenario, the widest query is still the entire metadata ATOM feed.
It's completely optional, and the intent is to provide a simplistic, standardized method for reducing the amount of data transferred. Users won't know (and have no way in knowing) the difference.
