I suposse you are talking about PHP My Admin <http://www.phpwizard.net/>. This works pretty well and is very easy to cofigurate. It only requires PHP and works on any O.S. PHP manage the conection of user's database as local users, what is safer than remote accesses. However, there is an issue: in the configuration you must type the user's name and password (normally, MySQL's root's password) in plaintext in a .php file. Of course, this .php's source code is supossed to be always protected, and you could (and should) protect all the directory with HTTP authentification; you could even (as I do) use a 'fake' virtual site (f.i. 'justforme.phpMyAdmin') and edit it in your HOSTS file so only you can access the application. But, in any case, your root password will be in plaintext somewhere, and you probably don't like this idea... I suposse you could modify the PHP source so it uses the same username and password you supply in HTTP authentification for connecting to MySQL.
