Nice that you are asking ;-)
Dynamic creation of pictures is a very cool thing PHP can do. So you
would need the support of .png (.gif) .jpg and freetype. From my
experience I can say that this is not the easiest task to get all the
needed libs and stuff. Also zlib is pretty useful.
