FYI,
To anyone looking to run Tomcat 4.x, it is very picky on the servlets it
runs.
Specifically I have been running Macromedia's Generator 2 in its online
state which is a giant semi Java servlet with 3.x for some time now.
Much better than JRun, cheaper to. :)
So far Generator works fine with 3.2.x, but I have not had any luck with
3.3, or 4.x.
I am fairly confident that 3.3 will one day work, but do not have much
hope for 4.x
4.x Also is very picky on the order of the servlets and entries in the
web.xml file. It is very strict. I ran into a ton of syntax errors
before I figured out the order issue. I am sure it has to do with how
the files xml is parsed.
Other than my horror experiences with Generator and Tomcat 4.x, 4.x
seems to be a stable and advanced Java Application server built on the
latest standards, but not as backwards compatible as it claims to be.
