Travis,
        Install or place the new jdk in you home directory or a parition with 
room left and place a symbolic link in the /usr/java directory.

That did the trick for me. Also this same method is used to point to 
several jdk's. Set all you programs to look for jdk, and point that to 
jdk1.4, or remove it and point it at another jdk.
