Kevin, Forget about telnet. If you are using it then stop using it and move over to SSH.
Back to the proper thing you need, that being to use your FTP client and see those .htaccess and other dot files: Within the Properties of the Site you are connecting to within WS_FTP click the startup tab. >From within it you should see Remote file mask near the bottom: just add in -la into their. This will then show all those files...... Let us know if this works and maybe others (hint) might get the idea that everything does not revolve around telnet.
