It turned out to have said it started raid but one drive was bad. Unfortunately I'd never looked at that in the early stages. What I still don't understand is why it showed us a working Raid with a non-working drive from the command line (/proc/mdstat) but didn't show us a raid section in the active monitor in the gui.
