Installing Firebird is fairly easy and straight forward. However removing an existing Sun/Cobalt install is not. Here is a snippet from an email I sent to another Cobald developer asking what you are. <--Begin Snippet--> Here are some quick instructions. First off edit /etc/inetd.conf and comment out the following line #gds_db stream tcp nowait.30000 root /usr/local/sbin/gds_inet_server gds_inet_server # InterBase Database Remote Server Then go into the /opt/interbase directory You will need to find and delete each file in the lib and include directory that are not in the /opt/interbase/lib or /opt/interbase/include directories. Do a locate or find for each file in those directories. There will be copies in /usr/lib and /usr/include Once all files outside of the installation dir are gone, you can tar/backup the /opt/interbase directory, and then delete it. That will complete the removal of CS. Now just download Firebird 1.0 and run the installer. It will provide you with a startup script for the SS, and install everything for you. Painlessly. After the installer finishes you may want to create sym links for each file in /opt/interbase/lib and /opt/interbase/include to /usr/lib/ and /usr/include. Then if you upgrade or change versions you will not have to go and delete the files again. They are just global sym links to your actual installation. That should do it. > This should be a topic the sun cobalt developers will be interested. I just don't know why there are no info on this topic in the forum except yours. Yes, but most use MySQL or PostgreSQL. They are scared of IB, and usually know nothing about it. It's great and I love it. I used IB 6.0 SS for over and year. I have now been running Firebird 1.0 SS for several months now and could not be happier. Links for you http://www.ibphoenix.com/ http://firebird.sourceforge.net/ Make sure to download these docs. http://www.ibphoenix.com/downloads/60All.zip There is more knowledge in them than any where else. Look there before asking questions. For the most part. Also the mailing/users lists/groups are good as well. Like the Cobalt ones. Good luck, hope that helps. <--End Snippet--> FYI Firebird 1.0.2 has had problems on Linux with third party tools accessing the database that all user names and passwords are stored in. So you may want to use Firebird 1.0 instead, or 1.0.1 to begin with and upgrade to the latest version once these quirks have been resolved. -- Sincerely, William L.
