Hi, Mike,
Welcome to Java Community! I love Java, as a language and as a platform. I have about 5 years of experience with it and I think it is the best language. First of all you should download and install Java SDK. I am using on my Cobalt j2sdk1.4.1_01. It is the last version of Java. (Do NOT use any old pkg, with old Java 1.3, 1.3.1, etc. and old Tomcat - 3.x) Then you should download and install JSP server, for example Tomcat ( 4.1.18). You may find instructions and examples in the Tomcat. If you ask me, I prefer combination - jBoss3.0.4+Tomcat 4.1.18. JBoss is a most popular free EJB container. If you want to create enterprise application, you should use EJB technology. Also you may use in JSP MVC approach, implemented into Struts technology. I use all these things and like them very much. Java is not just one more language. There are a lot of modern technologies, based on it. I believe, you always will be able to find people, who can help you with Java. Ask me, if you want.
