It might help if we knew what kind of router you were running.
For example, Linksys routers come with a nice firewall already set up.
However, if you're allowing port forwarding to a certain machine, then
you've got a point of failure there, and someone can come in if you're
not careful.

I am certainly no security expert; listen to the other guys, but also
take into consideration what type of hardware you're using. It might
already have what you need. (Just gotta look through the settings.)
