The ROM kernel can be booted by pressing a few buttons on the
frontpanel. 

However, there could be some sort of fallback mechanism which loads the
ROM kernel upon reboot if the kernel on disk is not present. But that's
pure speculation on my part and it's something I wouldn't want to test
out on a productive server. ;o)
