Lucky I asked then ;-) Thanks for the info - I just assumed any application needing access to a particular directory would be doing it as a user in a group that had read access to it. I did a bit more research, and installed SafeTP - looks like a pretty good all-round solution. I'm still interested in SSL FTP solutions though.
