I have it working, i was being a fool, though i do have some more questions:

I have installed the new version of ssh from the source - was no way it was 
working with rpms as they were only available for redhat 7.2 and 7.3, so 
there were dependency problems.

It seemed to install ok, but is not working!
I did not uninstall the pkgmaster version of ssh 3.1 which I have now 
noticed does not install to the default location but to a cobalt one.
Can anyone tell me what to do now?
- should i remove the old ssh using the uninstall script that it comes with 
or is there an easier way??
