Mike, that does seem to be the fix for the crontab issue. 

If you don't have a .exrc file just create one: echo "set backupcopy=yes" > .exrc in 
/root

You're right - that fixed it.  But in the process I notice that when I run
vi now I actually get vim, whereas before I patch I'm sure running vi gave
me standard vi.
