Actually, you just have to know what you're looking for, or check the product 
website for info (www.gnupg.org).  That would tell you that the GnuPG binary 
is named gpg, for example.

Usually doing a "foo -v" or "bar --version" will give you version info, or a 
usage hint on what the proper switch is.  "Or do "man baz" to get the man 
page, which will also tell you.
