Thanks for responding. I think that your kernel option is similar to
'netcfg/choose_interface', and in any case on my system was set to
ksdevice: bootif

That was actually a nice pointer, because the solution seems to be setting
kernel option BOOTIF=<mac> and leaving netcfg/choose_interface=auto, rather
than assigning it as I had been. So far, that seems to be working with the
few permutations I've tested.
