Hi Erik I once made use of debirf (http://cmrg.fifthhorseman.net/wiki/debirf) to build my own image for purposes of host discovery. It's a simple scripted framework, all you basically need to do is write a shell script to communicate with Cobbler and/or your asset management system of choice (I like Collins (https://tumblr.github.io/collins/), and incorporate the script into your initrd.
