I see no access from this client in the cobbler servers apache log.

On the failing client, after I get the missing CD-ROM message, I open
another virtual console, and the ip link command shows only  lo:
I don't appear to be getting a network. I can look at /var/log/syslog in
the console, and do not see any mention of network setup,

However I see in the syslog
main-menu[204] : INFO: Menu item 'cdrom-detect' selected.

which I guess just reflects that the pop up menu came up.
Looks like a clue, but I don't know how to disable that.
