While cross-country skiing from the skyway trailhead on the Grand Mesa (Mesa
County side) on Saturday I heard what I thought was a singing White-winged
Crossbill (WWCR). Today, I went back with my recording equipment and,
luckily, refound a singing WWCR fairly close to where I heard them yesterday
(UTM - 12s 755219 4325584 NAD 83). I have been skiing up there quite a bit
this winter and Red Crossbills have been very easy to find. I recently read
an interesting bit on the eBird website also about the unusual movements of
WWCR this fall/winter (
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/introduction-to%20crossbill-vocalizations).
I am going to try to revisit this area next weekend to see if I can search
for evidence of breeding by both crossbill species for the atlas. I know
there aren't a lot of birders that cross-country ski or snowshoe, but it may
be interesting for those that do to explore other spruce-fir forests in
Colorado to see if more can be turned up this winter. Also, If anyone is
interested in hearing portions of the recordings I got toady you can visit
the xeno-canto website (http://www.xeno-canto.org/) for a listen.
