Yesterday morning, after spending the morning with the Boulder Bird Club's First Sunday birders, Tim Smart and I stopped at Stearn's Lake. Among the 100s of Canadas, we found three Chen geese. One was a typical white Snow Goose. Another, located by Tim with diligent scope work, was a dark morph Snow. The third bird was a dark morph Chen goose that was smaller than the snows. The head was distinctly rounded. The bill was proportionally stubby and lacked the "grin patch." I am familiar with Ross's Goose primarily from New Mexico. I'm not sure what the status of the dark morph Ross's is in Colorado, but according to Sibley is it rare anywhere. I'm heading back to Stearn's Lake to see if the bird is still there.
