Cobirders,

I went out to the LeConte's Sparrow location this morning to help any birders
that might have been there. Against very improbable odds, part of the flow of
the Arkansas River is now flowing down the weedy channel that has been so
attractive to sparrows. What was a weedy bottomland yesterday now has
slowly-flowing water up to one foot deep. Knee boots would be necessary to
cross the channel.

In spite of difficult viewing conditions, Scott Shaum located two Le Conte's
Sparrows this morning. The challenge of relocating these birds just got a lot
harder.

On a related note, there were hunters camped at the sparrow site today. I was
hoping the end of the duck hunting season would make it easier for birders to
enjoy this area, but instead reinforced a generalization I have around here: If
there is one party at a reservoir, they will inevitably set up camp at the one
location that is most environmentally sensitive, or most likely to impact
people pursuing different activities.
