Thanks to all who have e mailed me with info on the Monte Vista area. I can report the Sandhill Cranes are here in growing numbers on the National Wildlife Refuge. I arrived late Tuesday night, and since Wednesday morning would estimate the numbers have grown by at least triple (as have the number of Crane viewers). It is difficult to estimate numbers of birds spread over the area, but would think it is safe to say there are at least 8,000 in the area now.
The place I have had the most luck photographing has been along Rd 8S just east of Hwy 15 at the south end of Monte Vista NWR during early morning and late in the afternoon. I have also seen them in smaller flocks along the Rio Grande, west of Hwy 15 at the Refuge, at sunrise within the refuge by the loop drive, and also a small number in flight over Alamosa NWR. It has been well worth the trip, and I am off to 8S again now to look for more photos.
