I facilitated a Boulder Bird Club trip to the western Boulder County today and the group of 21 enjoyed wonderful weather (warm, sunny, crystal blue skies and calm) and some good looks at most of our targets.
We started in Lyons with looks at a pair of American Dippers in the St. Vrain at the 2nd Ave. bridge along with what seemed to be a rather fully built new nest. Allenspark continues to be productive. The Fawn Brook Inn had one Gray-crowned and two Brown-capped Rosy Finches present when we arrived. A flock of about 50 was in and out while we were around. This flock was largely Gray-crowned, but someone in the group reported a Black at some point. Walking up 2nd to Ski Road brought us past a pair of homes with very active feeders host to a raucous group of Clarks Nutcrackers. Further up the road we had one male Cassin's Finch and a singing Brown Creeper. Although we didn't see it, Steve Frye's group from the Boulder Wild Bird Center related to us that they had seen the previously reported Band-tailed Pigeon around the Fawn Brook. After lunch we continued to Ward where two very friendly feeder hosts spoke with us. At the first feeder which consists of feed scattered on a deck, rosy finches and Pine Grosbeaks were reported as visiting several times per day, but none came by while we were present. This spot is in the parking pull off along the Peak to Peak Highway. The second feeder is at the next to last house on the left as you leave Ward on Utica St. heading toward Lefthand Canyon. We had at least three Pine Grosbeaks at this site and Evening Grosbeaks had been reported, but again we saw none while we were there.
