Thanks for all of your responses! Several asked about the  Oregon race junco 
and that makes a lot of sense. We had considered the same that  day. 
    The bird we saw was a little smaller,  perhaps not so rotund, had a 
sharper beak and never left it's feast on the tree  branches. We weren't used 
to 
seeing juncos stay solely in the trees as it ate  but we didn't totally rule it 
out. Still could have been....
