Over the last year or so of hikes (mainly in the foothills) I have
repeatedly seen grey birds perched atop a tree. They've become welcome
companions, and if it were not for all the turkey I saw last year I'd
have said that 2008 was the year of that bird for me. Interestingly
though I've never felt confident enough to put an identification on
the bird, and feel that perhaps there are a few species it could be.

Here is a photo on one such encounter:

Recently this gentle visitor came to my yard. Is it the same bird I
see regularly on hikes? Maybe, maybe not, sometimes I feel the bird is
taller/longer than others but maybe that is just temporary posture
differences. Any (local) information on the similar birds (and how to
differentiate them) would be appreciated.

Also, I saw a male mountain bluebird at 8K feet the other day. Nice
treat.

This morning I heard the cooing of a dove. Listening to the sound of
this bird on the Cornell website it seemed like a collared dove (the
sound certainly took me back to my days in the UK.) Are there any
other birds in this area that sound like that, or does it have to be
an eurasian collared dove?

Thanks in advance for any help.

regards,

Adam
