Re Monk Parakeets Colorado

Hi all:

I am familiar with the reports of the Monk Parakeet nests being
removed from utility poles by the utility companies in the Colorado
Springs area when I lived there.

Here in Tampa/StPete, FL Monk & Black-hooded Parakeets are considered
naturalized and countable on CBCs. I do not know of any concerted
effort to eradicate them in this area. It seems that in the last few
years their numbers have declined a bit based the CBC record trends.
Perhaps their nesting sites are being eradicated. Local utility
companies have a practice of removing Monk Parakeets big, bulky stick
nests from utility poles. The Black-hoodeds are hole nesters and
perhaps these trees are being removed? We also have a Blue-headed
Parakeet which is quite uncommon here and I finally got to see and
photograph them. In the South/Miami, FL area there are several other
parakeets/parrots found.

According to my reference on “Parrots” it is also known as Quaker
Parrot, Gray-breasted Parakeet and Cliff Parakeet. It is commonly
found in the lowlands of southern South America. With the clearing of
land in South America it is rapidly spreading there. Sounds like the
same scenario of certain native & non-native species birds spreading
like crazy in North America

Happy birding!
