Today I observed a pair of Great Blue Herons engaged in breeding behavior
and was able to get several good photos of their copulatory behavior with my
new 400 mm lens (with a crop factor of 1.6 on my Canon EOS digital camera
and on top of that my 1.4X extender gives an equivalent of almost 900 mm so
I can get better birds pics without disturbing them). I have posted 4 of
these pics on my blog at http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com

I believe that a pair of Black Phoebes on my friend's property near Canon
City have built a nest in the same location where previous pairs have nested
in past years. Since I have to lean the top half of my body over the edge,
while holding on to a cable and hooking my toes on the other edge, to look
back directly under a bridge it is difficult for me (hey, I'm 62 and this
acrobatic stuff isn't easy anymore) to check the nest. Two days ago I saw 3
Black Phoebes and 3 Say's Phoebes in just a quarter mile on my friend's
property. Last years two pair of Black Phoebes nested on or adjacent to
this property with at least one pair having two clutches.

More area breeding birds--I have seen two Great Horned Owls in the Canon
City area with 2 owlets each in their nests. Between the upper and lower
Arkansas Valley, I have seen 2 nesting Bald Eagles and 1 nesting Golden
Eagle. In area wetlands several male Great-tailed Grackles have been
displaying to a few females and giving territorial calls.

Migrants--There are now more than 15 Greater Yellowlegs feeding in flooded
fields along River Road (listed as E. 8th Street on google maps), and up to
50 Wild Turkeys have been feeding here for the past several weeks also. This
afternoon I heard then saw a flock of 40 or so Franklin's Gulls migrating
over Canon City.
