In the late afternoon Friday I visited Fossil Creek Reservoir in
southern Larimer County. A couple of the highlights include at least
one, possibly two Bonaparte's Gulls, a pair of Blue-winged Teal near
the now-defunct viewing platform, a few hundred Franklin's Gulls, and
at least 3 Greater White-fronted Geese. I don't know if these are
among the 12 or so that were seen earlier in the spring, but it seems
plausible. I also found a sole Ring-necked Duck among hundreds of
Scaup and hundreds of other duck species, which I thought was
interesting. On the far shore up one of the large cottonwoods, I
continued to follow the progress of a Great Horned Owl nest, and saw a
cute fluffy nestling pop out from under a parent bird. Swede Lake also
had a lot of waterfowl on it, but I passed that up to instead go to
Lower Latham Reservoir to see what I might find there.

At Lower Latham the only shorebirds I found were about 6 American
Avocets, a Greater Yellowlegs which was calling frequently, and
several Killdeer. Of note also were a few dozen Great-tailed Grackles,
mostly over on the western portion of the marshy area.
I also visited the Beebe Draw portions along Weld County Roads 40 and
42, but didn't find much that I hadn't already encountered elsewhere.
The only birds of note for me were 6 foraging Wilson's Snipe along
Road 42, very close to the road and probing the mud in their
distinctive herky-jerk style.
