Reports of loons on the Front Range have been scarce this spring, so a Common
Loon in breeding plumage at Lake Loveland (Larimer County) may be of interest.
It has been there for at least 2 days, along with numerous Horned Grebes in
breeding plumage. Best viewing from the swim beach in the northwest corner,
where a gaggle of gulls are omnipresent. Although the gaggle is not large,
there always seems to be something of interest (usually Thayer's Gull or Lesser
Black-backed Gull, or both). This morning the attraction was an adult Thayer's
Gull, and a handful of pink-breasted Franklin's Gulls, smartly adorned in their
breeding plumage.
