The Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory and the Colorado Mountain Club are teaming up to present a seminar and hike series to help people recognize the birds they see through appearance, behavior and song.
The seminar, scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, April 23, will take place at CMC’s headquarters, the American Mountaineering Center, at 710 10th St., Golden. RMBO biologist Jeff Birek will use sight and sound to introduce many of the dozens of species of birds that live in the Front Range region. In this interactive and fun session, Birek will lead the audience through a “Birding 101” short course, helping people learn to distinguish a warbler from a vireo and hear the differences among birds’ songs. Participants can test what they’ve learned at the end of the seminar with a quiz. Three co-led hikes are scheduled to take birders into different life zones, including plains, foothills and montane regions. The hikes are planned for May 16 at Bear Creek Lake State Park, June 6 at Lair o’ the Bear Park, and July 25 at Summit Lake. Hike leaders from RMBO and CMC will point out and identify the many bird species encountered along the way and offer information about the birds and their habitats. For more information about the hikes, when and where to meet, and what to bring, go to the RMBO Web site at www.rmbo.org The Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory is a nonprofit organization that seeks to conserve birds and their habitats through science, education and stewardship.
