The Black Canyon Audubon Society offered a birding/conservation field trip
this morning. Dennis Garrison, Rick ?, and I birded the park this morning
from 7 to 9 am.

Here are the highlights we found (in no particular order):
Bushtits - 2
Bald Eagle - one adult (it is getting late for an adult to be in Delta
County. Are they nesting somewhere on the Gunnison or Uncompahgre River
near the park?)
Tree Swallows - about 350 or so
Cliff Swallows - about 10
Bank Swallows - about 5
Barn Swallows - about 25
Great-tailed Grackle - after their mysterious disappearance this winter it
was interesting to see one male.
Franklin's Gull - 2
Osprey - 2
Cedar Waxwing - about 12
Yellow-rumped Warblers - about 6 (both Audubons and Myrtle's)
Red-breasted Mergansers - 2 female
Marsh Wren - about 8 singing males
White-faced Ibis - about 45 or so
Bewick's Wrens - about 4 singing males
Bonaparte's Gull - 2

After birding we were joined by about 8 others and wrapped approximately 30
or so cottonwood trees with chicken wire in areas where beavers are hard at
work deforesting the riparian area along the Gunnison River. Thanks for the
help to the volunteers that showed up. Good work!
