I too have been enjoying the storm birding phenomenon yesterday and today. Many
unusual sights and many first of the season birds for me. A very special treat
was the Vermilion Flycatcher refound this morning by Christian Nunes, who a
couple of us were lucky enough to be walking with when he spotted it.
Early this morning I spotted and photographed at close range three subadult (I
and/or II) Bald Eagles about 1/2 mile north of Boulder Reservoir. One was in a
tree and two were on the ground. The younger bird walked up to the slightly
older bird and seemed to want to pick a fight. I think that was a mistake. The
older bird ended up pouncing on the younger bird, and the younger defended
itself by laying on its back talons up, about as inviting as when your cat is
all claws up. Anyway, I photographed all this fun, and it did seem like puppies
or kittens scrapping rather than a fight to the death. When I reviewed the
photos, I noticed that one of the birds had a large tag on its leg: good old
number A-15. Does anyone know who might have tagged this bird and would like to
know about its current status and have a photo showing how brave it is?
